"Eating causes chemical changes in the brain that an individual experiences as pleasure, beyond the normal satisfaction one gets from eating when hungry."

If you have ever reached for food when you're feeling stressed you should be well acquainted with emotional overeating. Another challenge with emotional overeating is that it is not something you can "fix" though willpower or dieting. The reasons why you eat when you are sad, angry or stressed are triggered by chemical firestorms in your brain that occur in response to certain emotions. Almost all people suffer serious emotional problems at some stage in their lives, but when you use food to cope with these unpleasant emotions and change how you feel, you set yourself up for a lifetime of health problems.

Eating and drugs of abuse share a common "reward" pathway in the brain. Eating causes chemical changes in the brain that an individual experiences as pleasure, beyond the normal satisfaction one gets from eating when hungry.

Overeating brings pleasure and a short-lived reprieve from stress, sadness and other negative emotions, but as with all addictions, the highs are followed by lows and the cycle starts all over again.

For the emotional overeater, abstinence from highly refined foods and all other mood altering chemicals is the first step in recovery.

How we think determines how we feel, which in turn determines our behaviour and leads to that driving need to eat in order to cover up unpleasant feelings and escape from reality.

We need to change our toxic belief system if we are to achieve respite from emotional overeating.

Emotional overeating is only a symptom of an underlying problem that will not go away unless YOU do something positive TODAY!
